Work Experience – a student’s perspective

You’ve probably heard about the benefits of gaining work experience alongside your studies. It can help with career decision making, allows you to develop transferable skills like communication and teamwork and builds your confidence and resilience. In this guest blog we hear from recent graduate Natasha Barnes about her work experience with McGinley Education.

This year I have had the incredible opportunity to intern for McGinley Education – part of the Recruitment business – McGinley Group. I work in the Marketing Department and have been tasked with planning out their social media activities.

I’ve always been passionate about working in marketing and at first I must admit I was a little apprehensive to take on such a role in a recruitment company, as I never really considered how challenging it can be in this sector, however, I have learnt a great deal during my time with McGinley. The work they do to stand out in this extremely competitive marketplace is impressive.Natasha Barnes McGinley

A typical day consists of working in the fast-paced environment of the Liverpool branch, completing ongoing marketing projects and communicating with the Group marketing team based at Head Office. We decide which angle/approach to take with our social media posts and for these to be approved by senior management. In addition to researching for content on social media channels, I have been responsible for seeking analytics and relaying information relating to other competitors.

Paul (Director of McGinley Education) and his team have been so welcoming and flexible allowing me to do this internship around my Master’s course and have blessed me with some much-needed work experience in the marketing field. I have been able to see first-hand the kind of rigorous reporting and planning that companies expect. Not only have I been able to observe dedication in action, I’ve been pushed to meet higher standards and encouraged to think more critically about my work.

I was scared and felt inexperienced at first, but now I feel so much more confident in myself and my abilities and have gained many skills which will hopefully enable me with my masters and in future work environments.
